Award-winning broadcaster Eamon Keane to present new ‘Deise Today’ morning programme on WLR

WLR FM is pleased to announce that former RTE and Newstalk broadcaster and producer Eamon Keane is to take up a new full-time position with the station this January.

On Monday, 9th January Eamon will take over the mid-morning  programme on WLRFM, presenting a new show ‘Deise Today’ replacing Deise AM which was presented by Billy McCarthy for 27 years until his untimely passing in November.

Eamon is already well-known to WLR listeners from his psychotherapy advice features on Deise AM every Wednesday morning since 2014.

Brother of BBC journalist Fergal Keane and nephew to playwright John B Keane,  born in Dublin, Eamon`s grandfather hails from Ardmore, Co. Waterford and Eamon lives in Ring, West Waterford.

Eamonn has a strong media back round. For three years he presented ‘Lunchtime with Eamon Keane’ on Newstalk for which he won a prestigious PPI Award for Best News Programme.

He has been a reporter on RTE`s Morning Ireland, News at One and the Drivetime programme. He has also been senior producer on the Marian Finucane and Vincent Browne shows and a contributor to the Stephen Nolan programme on BBC Radio Ulster.

A qualified therapist and lecturer in counselling and community work, Eamon is also a talented musician, touring with John Sheehan and the Dubliners, releasing a platinum-selling album and writing music for both film and TV.

The new ‘Deise Today’ show, will be produced by Jennifer Long.

Jennifer, from Portlaw, has been producing DEISE AM for the past seven years, including in 2014 when the show won a prestigious PPI silver award for ‘Best Current Affairs’ programme.

A graduate in journalism from Dublin City University, prior to joining WLR in 2009 Jennifer was with the ‘Waterford News & Star’ where she worked as a reporter for several years.

WLRFM Managing Director Des Whelan has welcomed Eamon Keane’s appointment.

“Obviously in replacing Billy McCarthy, Eamon has big shoes to fill, but we think he is the man for the job; he has fantastic experience”.

“Much like Billy, Eamon has great empathy with people and he knows what works on radio. I know he will make a great contribution to the service WLR provides to its listeners.”

Programme Director Michael Byrne said he was very pleased to have Eamon join the WLR prime-time line-up.

"Eamon is a great presenter and he joins a very strong team here.  We look forward to 2017 and we wish both Eamon and Jennifer all the best with the new show. I’m certainly looking forward to working with them to help establish ‘Deise Today’ as one of the top radio talk shows on the dial."

Minister Michael Creed opens €59m SmartPly manufacturing facility

Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine Michael Creed T.D officially opened the €59M Medite SmartPly upgrade of its manufacturing facility in Belview, Waterford Port.

Medite SmartPly, part of Coillte Group, manufactures and supplies innovative and sustainable wood panel products to customers throughout Europe. In June 2016 a €59M upgrade of the SmartPly OSB plant was completed securing it as one of the South-East region’s largest exporters.

SmartPly employs over 160 people directly at the plant with a further 200 jobs supported indirectly in the wider community. The SmartPly plant uses trees, harvested mainly in the Southern part of the country, to manufacture innovative and sustainable Oriented Strand Board or OSB which is used mainly in the construction, flooring and furniture sectors.

Minister Michael Creed said ”Forestry and the timber processing sector play a crucial role in Ireland’s export industry. The investment of €59M in the development of this state of the art facility will enhance SmartPly’s ability to manufacture innovative products to meet the ever-evolving needs of international customers while providing a very important outlet for pulpwood from Coillte’s forests and private forests across the South East region. I welcome this investment as SmartPly generates significant employment in the region, both directly and indirectly, and also assists in the development of forestry in the region.”

The upgrade of the facility was completed over 16 months with 220 additional people employed during construction. A state of the art manufacturing line was assembled within the new building delivering significant operational facilities and underpinning new product development. Medite SmartPly’s strategic vision is to become the leading European supplier of innovative, market led wood panel products, Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and Oriented Strand Board (OSB).
