WLR FM is pleased to announce that former RTE and Newstalk broadcaster and producer Eamon Keane is to take up a new full-time position with the station this January.
On Monday, 9th January Eamon will take over the mid-morning programme on WLRFM, presenting a new show ‘Deise Today’ replacing Deise AM which was presented by Billy McCarthy for 27 years until his untimely passing in November.
Eamon is already well-known to WLR listeners from his psychotherapy advice features on Deise AM every Wednesday morning since 2014.
Brother of BBC journalist Fergal Keane and nephew to playwright John B Keane, born in Dublin, Eamon`s grandfather hails from Ardmore, Co. Waterford and Eamon lives in Ring, West Waterford.
Eamonn has a strong media back round. For three years he presented ‘Lunchtime with Eamon Keane’ on Newstalk for which he won a prestigious PPI Award for Best News Programme.
He has been a reporter on RTE`s Morning Ireland, News at One and the Drivetime programme. He has also been senior producer on the Marian Finucane and Vincent Browne shows and a contributor to the Stephen Nolan programme on BBC Radio Ulster.
A qualified therapist and lecturer in counselling and community work, Eamon is also a talented musician, touring with John Sheehan and the Dubliners, releasing a platinum-selling album and writing music for both film and TV.
The new ‘Deise Today’ show, will be produced by Jennifer Long.
Jennifer, from Portlaw, has been producing DEISE AM for the past seven years, including in 2014 when the show won a prestigious PPI silver award for ‘Best Current Affairs’ programme.
A graduate in journalism from Dublin City University, prior to joining WLR in 2009 Jennifer was with the ‘Waterford News & Star’ where she worked as a reporter for several years.
WLRFM Managing Director Des Whelan has welcomed Eamon Keane’s appointment.
“Obviously in replacing Billy McCarthy, Eamon has big shoes to fill, but we think he is the man for the job; he has fantastic experience”.
