Design Risk Assessment Training

As per the HSA guidelines “The duties of Designers are in addition to those under Section 16 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005 which requires designers to ensure that the project is capable to being constructed to be safe, can be maintained safely and complies with all relevant health and safety legislation.”


Designers must:


  • Identify any hazards that their design may present during construction and subsequent maintenance;
  • Where possible, eliminate the hazards or reduce the risk e.g. can roof-mounted equipment be placed at ground level or can guardrails be provided to protect workers from falling?
  • Communicate necessary control measures, design assumptions or remaining risks to the PSDP so they can be dealt with in the safety and health plan;
  • Co-operate with other designers, PSDP and PSCS;
  • Take account of any existing safety and health plan or safety file;
  • Comply with directions issued by the PSDP or PSCS;
  • Where no PSDP has been appointed, inform the client that a PSDP must be appointed.

Koto Performance at Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens

The Koto is a traditional stringed instrument made from Kiri wood. It has 13 strings that are usually strung over 13 movable bridges along the width of the instrument. Players can adjust the string pitches by moving the white bridges before playing. To play the instrument, the strings are plucked using three finger picks, otherwise known as plectra.

Random Roadside Drug Testing Commenced on the 13th of April 2017

A commencement order on 13th April 2017 gave effect to the Road Traffic Act 2016. This legislation will make it illegal for motorists to drive while under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine or heroin. It is also now an offence to drive while under the influence of cannabis containing the drug Salvi-dex which is used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Tests may also be conducted for the presence of alcohol, benzodiazepines and other prescribed medication.


Reporting for Work under the Influence of Drugs and Alcohol

Under Section 13(1) b the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 all employees must ensure that they are not under the influence of an intoxicant (defined as including drugs and alcohol and any combination of drugs or of drugs and alcohol) to the extent that he or she is in such a state as to endanger his or her own safety, health or welfare at work or that of any other person. Under Section 13(1)b of the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 employers are obliged to remove any employee from their place of work, who reports for or is on duty under the influence of intoxicants.
