Waterford scientists in running for three awards at the Pharma Industry Awards 2017

Waterford Institute of Technology has been shortlisted in three categories at the upcoming Pharma Industry Awards 2017 on Thursday, 5 October 2017.

The awards recognise and celebrate the most original and innovative individuals and organisations that demonstrate excellence in the Irish Pharma sector.

WIT’s BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science which prepares graduates for the pharmaceutical industry where this a strong demand for qualified graduates has been shortlisted for an award, while WIT’s  Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre (PMBRC) has been shortlisted in two categories.

Since launching in 2014, the Pharma Industry Awards has established itself as the benchmark for excellence for those operating in Ireland's pharma industry.

The winners will be announced at the Pharma Industry Awards 2017 ceremony on Thursday, 5 October at the Clayton Hotel Burlington Road, Dublin.

The four-year BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science at Waterford Institute of Technology has been shortlisted for a Pharma Education & Training Award in the Pharma Industry Awards 2017.

WIT will be up against the Certificate in Biopharmaceutical Processing - Cork Institute of Technology; GetReSkilled Holdings; Institute of Technology Tallaght; Life Sciences Manufacturing Operations - Cork Training Centre Biopharma Facility; NIBRT and Pharmaceutical MSc Programmes - Dublin Institute of Technology.

WIT's Head of Department of Science, Dr Orla O' Donovan said: "We are delighted to have our Pharmaceutical Science programme shortlisted for this prestigious award. We continuously engage with the pharmaceutical companies in the South East and nationally to ensure that the programme is industry relevant and the graduates are work-ready."

The BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science is a four year honours degree aimed at producing graduates for the pharmaceutical industry. Students will be exposed to a broad range of subjects and laboratory instrumentation relevant to the pharmaceutical industry. The course also provides graduates with a range of transferable skills so that graduates are qualified for a wide range of science-based industries.

The PMBRC has been shortlisted in two categories for the hotly contested Pharma Industry Awards 2017. The PMBRC has been shortlisted in the “Pharma Research Centre of the Year” and “Research and Development Achievement” categories. PMBRC is an applied research centre which aims to support the sustainable growth of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry in the south east of Ireland.

Speaking of the news, PMBRC Manager Dr. Niall O'Reilly said: “we are delighted to be shortlisted for the Pharma Industry Awards this year. The nominations recognise the overall performance of our centre and the quality of our research in particular. The past 12 months have been our busiest to date in terms of research output and we have successfully grown all aspects of our operations from basic to applied research activities”.
