Waterford Jazz Weekender Returns for 2017

IMG 0209

Next weekend sees the return of Waterford Jazz Weekender to various venues in Waterford City. Experience an eclectic mix of jazz styles from Dixieland to Bebop and beyond, performed by Waterford musicians along with special visiting guest artists.

The weekend launch will be this Wednesday the 27th of September at 9pm at The Munster Bar on The Mall in the city with a funky jazz gig with The Phil Collins Trio, plus special guests Dylan Bible (guitar) and Danny Pullman (saxophone).

Phil Collins, event organiser said “The weekend is about bringing jazz to the people.  We have present and past students. Playing at Uisce Bheatha on Thursday night from 9.15pm Saturday is a big one for us.  Not only are we delighted to welcome world acclaimed Karen Underwood and band to The Reg for a one off show but we also have a master class with “Opus Pocus” at Garter Lane, where you can learn about the history and instruments of the big band. Featuring live performances of fabulous big band classics, you can enjoy discovering styles and techniques used in swing and big band music in a fun and educational format which we hope will interest all age groups”.

Collins also stated “We also have something new this year.  Together with Dooley's Hotel we have Jazzebel with the superlative Jane O'Brien-Moran on vocals, accompanied by her brother Jimmy O'Brien-Moran on sax and long-time collaborator Orm Kenny on guitar. Featuring much loved classics from the Great American Songbook, some Latin Jazz gems and a few surprises, this is a must for fans of soulful, classy, jazz singing. This starting at 5:30 pm on Saturday, The Dry Dock Bar at Dooley's Hotel. There is also the added bonus that if you bring along your ticket for the Opus Pocus performance at Garter Lane you can treat yourself to the €16.50 Jazzabel dining deal – 2 courses and Tea & Coffee in the Dry Dock Bar on presentation of Opus Pocus Ticket, when ordering from this menu on the night.  It’s going to be a brilliant weekend and a great celebration of jazz and I would encourage everyone who likes music to come and join us over the weekend”.

Phil Collins thanked the venues for this years Waterford Jazz Weekender which are  Garter Lane Art Centre, The Reg, The Munster Bar, Dooley’s Hotel, Uisce Bheatha who make the weekend possible and thanked especially Waterford City and County Council  for their continued support.
