Walsh's Bakehouse Blaa takes Silver in Blás Awards 2017

Walshs Bakehouse Blas Award Sept 2017

In what many describe as The Irish Food Oscars, Walsh's Bakehouse successfully attained the Silver Award in their category for the Waterford Blaa.

This weekend at the Dingle Food Festival, the Blás na hEireann awards are handed out to the best food and drink, produced in Ireland.  This is the 10th Anniversary of the awards and Waterford was very well represented in a number of categories.

Commenting on the Silver Award for Walsh's Bakehouse Blaas, Michael Walsh said " We are really over the moon with this award for the second time, in a really competitive category.  It's such a well recognised accolade, with consumers and buyers alike.  What's unique here, is that all categories are being judged on blind tasting, with flavour and quality being the big winners."

This Autumn, Walsh’s Bakehouse embarks on a new chapter,  as a new bakery opens to facilitate the production and supply of a wider range of traditional handmade breads to the foodservice and hospitality industry at home and abroad.

Walsh’s Bakehouse is a third-generation bakery, making the Waterford Blaa since 1921.  But the Blaa dates back to the 1700s, when the French Huguenot’s came to Waterford.

At that time, Waterford was a powerful trading city for wares such as leather, wheat, flour, butter, and other agricultural produce from the area, which were shipped to England and the Continent. One of the enterprising Huguenots set up a bakery in Waterford city in 1702. Here they baked bread to feed their own families and children. It’s thought the round bread rolls, now familiar as Blaas, were first made from leftover pieces of bread dough.

Today more than 12,000 are sold in Waterford alone on a daily basis and The Blaa proudly achieved European PGI status in 2013.

What Our Members Say

“We found the Toys 4.0 Engineers exhibition to be an excellent platform for us to showcase our business. The attendees were exactly the people we hoped to meet and we are delighted to have made new contacts as a result. We also unexpectedly had some success in making supplier connections with other exhibitors. The venue was ideal with adequate sound and space and the presentations were informative. Overall the event was professionally run and we had an excellent experience. We will definitely be exhibiting again next year. I cannot recommend the event highly enough.”
